What happened
A change to the rules on dyes in 2005 left fourteen DMC colours in seven pairs that nobody could tell apart. DMC kept one number out of each pair and stopped making the other, and the surviving skein carries both numbers on its label. 504 is one of the seven that went, so a pattern calling for it is asking for DMC 3813.
The other six are 731, 776, 781, 806, 971, 3773.
