Thread

How many skeins of one colour.

Type the number of stitches in a colour and it says how many skeins that colour takes. Our own PDF prints this figure for every thread in a pattern, so this is the key page with one row in it.

SkeinsStitches a skein covers
1 strand
2 strands
3 strands
4 strands
6 strands

The constant behind this is 2,600 stitches to a skein at 2 strands on 14 count, worked out from real printed patterns. Halve the strands and the thread halves. Move to a finer fabric and it drops in proportion.

Cross stitches only. Backstitch has a different constant, because a line doubles back on itself and every loose end costs thread.
